Robots Exclusion Checker for Chrome quickly detects accessibility and indexing issues

One of my favorite Chrome extensions nicely solves a problem that is right at the beginning of success in SEO. The URL needs to be accessible for bots and have indexing enabled in the header. While with other extensions you have to click to get results, with this extension everything happens automatically, plus the extension icon color-codes to indicate a potential problem.

Sam Gipson is the author of this piece of SW and it is clear from the solution what problem he wanted to solve elegantly.

The extension verifies the URL immediately after loading it in the browser:

  • if the address is not blocked in robots.txt
  • what header rules it sends in the robots meta
  • and what it sends in the X-robots header

If everything is OK, the icon is green. In case there is a problem, the icon is orange. Easy, fast and no work for you as a user.

In addition, it can optionally track and color-code rel parameters for href links:

  • nofollow
  • ugc
  • sponsored
